Augustine Elaine Downie was born in Jamaica W.I. in Trinity Ville in the parish of St. Thomas on April 4, 1922. Her parents were John Edward Downie and Catherine Bogle. She wanted everyone to know that her preferred name was Elaine. To those closest to her she was also known as Teenie, ma, mommy, sis, grandma, and sometimes Nurse Downie. As a young woman in Jamaica, Elaine was a midwife in Port Maria and the surrounding areas. She also managed to become a very proficient seamstress during this time. She migrated to the United States in 1954 and continued to work in the health care field. She later retired as a Supervisory Public Health Nurse. Elaine was an ambitious hard -working woman with a love for life. She studied and graduated from Hunter College as a Registered Nurse (BSN) and continued her studies to receive her Masters’ degree in Public Health Administration. This was accomplished while raising small children and sometimes carrying two jobs. Elaine was known for her love of education, music, traveling, dancing, decorating, Thanksgiving dinners with her finest wares, dressing up with high heeled shoes, and flowers. However, she was known most of all for her large fiery personality as red as her hair and her even larger compassionate and loving heart and love of God. She loved and fussed over her family and friends with great passion. She was not afraid to tell you if she thought you were wrong in a situation or voicing her opinion even if she was in the minority. She layed a foundation of Faith, Love, and Strength for many. Elaine is survived by her son Basil Terrelonge and wife, daughters, Denise Lowe and husband and Cheryl Roberts, grand- children, Angela Terrelonge, Kurt Terrelonge, Amoy Terrelonge, Norman Terrelonge, and Sandra Lowe, as well as immediate family Sybil Chong, Gilbert Downie, Sonia Downie (B), Madge Downie, Sonia Downie, Linnette Brown and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great-grandchildren and loving friends.
