Mr. Virgil L. Thompson, age 93, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, passed peacefully on Thursday, December 18, 2014, at Peachtree Christian Hospice. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 67 years, Reba Johnson Thompson; daughter, Beth Thompson; son and daughter-in-law; Lee and Connie Thompson and their daughter Rebecca; all of Lawrenceville, GA; brother, Truman Thompson of Buford, GA; sister-in-law, Nell Thompson of Saint Mary’s, FL; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, J.W., Milton, Dewey, and Felton. Virgil was born on May 24, 1921, to Emory Parks Thompson and Martha Ann Rebecca Jones Thompson at home in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was a 1940 graduate of Lawrenceville High School. Mr. Thompson was a veteran of World War II serving in the 1105th Army Air Forces obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He was stationed in Brazil for three years at the world’s largest Air Force Base during that time. He received the American Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal and was discharged on September 23, 1945 at Fort McPherson, Georgia. Mr. Thompson retired from General Motors Doraville Plant after 34 years of service as a Receiving Clerk with the Parts Division. He was a Past President of the Lawrenceville Lions Club, an Elder Emeritus at Lawrenceville First Christian Church, and was active with the Democratic Party in Gwinnett County. He enjoyed deep sea fishing, baseball and being with his family. Mr. Thompson was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend. His greatest joy in life was the love of his family and many friends. The family would like to give special thanks to Mr. Thompson’s caregivers, Marlyn, Linda, Iona, and Toyin. The Service Honoring the Life of Mr. Thompson will be held Monday, December 22, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. at Tom M. Wages Lawrenceville Chapel with Army Air Forces Military Honors rendered at the end of the service. Rev. Dr. Jay White and Rev. Dr. Hoyt Huff will officiate. Interment will follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
