Lewis Phillip (Phil) Wooden passed away suddenly on Monday, April 2, 2012, at Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, Georgia. Phil was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee and was the only son to Ira and Leomia Wooden. He graduated from Tyner High School in Chattanooga in 1961 and from the University of Tennessee in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He worked with TVA while at UT and then moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he was awarded a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. He worked in research and development at Bell Labs in Indianapolis from 1966-1969 and for Hewlett-Packerd in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1969-1971. He became Division Manager for Scientific Atlanta where he worked from 1971-1984. In 1984 he opened his own business, Phil Wooden Homes in Lawrenceville, GA. He is survived by his wife, Martha S. Wooden; daughter, Susan Wooden Simonds (Matt); sons, Christopher Phillip Wooden (Amanda) and David Thomas Wooden. He has four beautiful grandchildren: Molly, Cooper, and Rosemary Wooden and Samantha Simonds. He has one sister, Jo Ann Wooden Kell, two nephews, Jeff Kell and John Kamman, and two nieces, Elizabeth Shoupe and Nancy Gillespie, as well as several cousins. He was an active charter member of the All Saints Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir and served on the building committee, on the pastoral call committee, and as President of the congregation. A Funeral Service to Celebrate the Life of Phil Wooden will be held Friday, April 6, 2012 at 10AM at All Saints Lutheran Church in Lilburn. Interment will follow at 4:30PM at Lakewood Memory Gardens East, Chattanooga, Tennessee. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 6PM until 8PM at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel. Just wanted to let everyone know that even though Phil and I didn't get to watch Fox News together when he was here in New Mexico recently, the first show I watched on my new HDTV was Fox News. It was magnificent.
I felt that we got to know Phil and Martha while they were in New Mexico and I am saddened that I won't be able to continue that friendship with Phil.
We offer our heartfelt condolences to all of te Wooden family. We were only beginning to appreciate how special a person Phil was when he visited here in
Albuquerque - even though Matt had always told us he was a pretty neat fellow. We are just grateful we had that opportunity to know him a little better.

I am so,so sorry, saddened and shocked to hear of Phil's passing. Both you and Phil are in my prayers. The memories of our time together in Germany will always stay with me. I will stay in touch. My God heal your broken heart.

I have known and worked on a lot of Phil's houses (including his personal one) since he started building homes. Phil was a fine man who took pride in his name and built a quality home. I attended Tyner High School with Phil. We called him Philip back then. I've not been in touch with him since high school and regret that we lived so close to his home and never saw each other in our adult years.
It's especially good to know that his life here has been spent well and that his eternal life will be wonderful with the knowledge that he is now in a better place having prepared well for his passing.
I certainly enjoyed being his friend in our early years.

I'm saddened to have received this news from Annabeth via e-mail from Vince Sitterding. I recall meeting Phil at my grandmother's (Clara Sitterding) house in Columbus, IN (1970's), at my parent's (June and Bill Marshall) house in Portsmouth, NH, and at a family gathering on Vic and Till's farm in Brownstown, IN (1994). I empathize with the void Phil leaves with all his children that I met on a hot humid day in Brownstown. It feels like, to me, a large chunk of a house foundation disappears into a void. We all know Phil is in a better place. The most difficult part is that we can't see, touch, or talk with him. I'm happy to have met Phil and my only regret is not to have seen more of him. I know Phil's children will step up and replace the missing piece of foundation to support Mom (Martha Sue) as life forces us to adjust and move forward, albeit no easy task. You have each other and God to show you the way.

Martha, Chris and family, I am truly heartbroken about your loss. Phil was a gentle giant of great knowledge, integrity and common sense. I enjoyed him coming in my office at the bank and "just talking" about life, family and the building business. He was a driving force of the Gwinnett County housing growth, building a quality home for his customers.....
May he rest in peace, as he gave so much during his life here on earth.

We are so saddened to hear of the death of Phillip. He was a good man and will be missed by anyone who knew him. We are so grateful to have been with him at our 50th School Reunion. May God grant the family the comfort that they need at this most difficult time.
