ANDREWS: Modenia Elizabeth Nash Andrews, age 82, passed from her earthly body, March 20, 2008. Born in Atlanta, GA on September 06, 1925, she was the elder daughter of Cosper Holmes and Exer Johnson Nash. She was raised in Decatur, GA, where she graduated from Decatur Girls? High in 1942. She continued her education at North Georgia Junior College earning a Bachelors of Science in Home Economics Education at Georgia State College for Women in 1946. She taught Home Economics in Gwinnett County Schools after graduation and before marrying Hugh Ector Andrews, Jr. of McRae, GA who was a veteran of the United States Army during WWII and a recent graduate of UGA. Widowed at a very early age, she was left to raise her three daughters and educate each of them while at the same time, continued her own education, receiving a Masters Degree in Nutrition from the University of Georgia. She devoted her life to the job she loved, her church, her three daughters, and her two granddaughters. She was a Coordinator for the Department of School Nutrition for Atlanta City Schools and promoted to the Directorship and was dearly loved by her thousands of employees. She served as President of two local Chapters of the Georgia School Food Service Association, elected State Treasurer and later served as State President. In that capacity she traveled nationwide to attend conventions and meetings. She received Lifetime Membership in Atlanta Chapters Alpha and Sigma School Food Association as well as Lifetime Membership in Georgia School Food Service Association. She received many honors throughout her career and upon retirement in 1991 she received a proclamation from State of Georgia House of Representatives honoring her years of service and dedication to the children of Georgia. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary education sorority. She served as President of the Atlanta Chapter where she enjoyed many years of service. She was a very active member of her church, Snellville United Methodist Church in Snellville, Georgia where she served as President of the Adult Bible class for many years. She enjoyed several years of travel and group activities with the senior group at the church as well as volunteering in the church office. While Mrs. Andrews loved her career, her favorite job was that of Mama and Gram; she was devoted to her three daughters and two granddaughters who were the core of her universe. Though she worked full-time, she spent many hours working in PTA activities, volunteering as a class mom, Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and a myriad of other activities in which her ?girls? were involved. She was camp director for Fernbank Girl Scout Camp. She made her home a place where friends could come for great food and love. To those who knew her, she was a pillar of strength and proved to be a remarkable example of what one can do if one tries, believes in themselves and trusts in God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Ector Andrews, Jr. and her beloved parents. She is survived by her daughters, Beth Crook, Louise Stafford, Ruth Heerwagen, sons-in law, Bill Stafford and Woody Heerwagen as well as her two dearly loved granddaughters, MaryBeth Crook and Emmy Crook. She is also survived by her sister, Opal Nash Hicks, in-laws, along with several family members and a host of people who adored her. The family will receive guests at Tom Wages Funeral Home in Snellville, Georgia on Saturday, March 22nd from 2:00-4:00pm and Sunday, March 23, from 6:00-8:00pm. Funeral Services will be held at Snellville United Methodist Church in Snellville, Georgia on Monday, March 24, 2008 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at the historic Friendship Baptist Church Grounds in Snellville, GA alongside generations of her family. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Macular Degeneration Foundation.
