Floyd Allen Cofer, Sr. age 90, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, died Monday, December 16, 2013. He was born on July 9, 1923, in Grayson, Georgia to the late Effie Brooks Cofer and John Jefferson Cofer. The Service Honoring the Life of Floyd Cofer will be held Thursday, December 19, 2013, at 1:00 P.M. at Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ryan Jensen and Rev. Glenn Small officiating. Naval Military Honors will be rendered at the end of the service at the church. Interment will follow at the Fairview Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Beside his parents, Mr. Cofer was preceded in death by three brothers, Horace Cofer, Pinkney Cofer, John Cofer, and a sister, Gippie Cofer Brooks. Floyd Cofer was a graduate of Grayson High School where his family was lifelong residents. He was a United States Navy veteran during World War II serving in the states and had just been assigned to a ship when the war ended. Upon returning home from the Navy, he married Elizabeth Melton, a loving marriage of 67 years. He was a longtime member of Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and member of the Bert Tippit Sunday School Class. Mr. Cofer attended the weekly Thursday Men’s Bible Study Group at Hometown Bar-B-Q with Christian men of all faiths. He worked with the Boy Scouts, member of the Lawrenceville Lions Club, Grayson Masonic Lodge #549 F. & A. M., and member of the Gwinnett County Fair Association. When Al and Anne were young, he enjoyed working with them showing their ponies at the Fair. In his later years, Mr. Cofer enjoyed maintaining a small garden, and his specialty was growing tomatoes and beans. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the Annual Cofer Dove Shoot. Mr. Cofer traveled for King Hardware Company for 19 years before being associated with United States Gypsum (USG) Company until his retirement in 1985 after 21 years of service. He received the Number One Salesperson Award for both companies numerous times during his 40 year career. Floyd was a well known citizen of Lawrenceville and will be greatly missed by his adoring family and many friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Melton Cofer; son & daughter-in-law, F. Allen (Al) Cofer, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Loganville, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Anne Cofer Connell and her husband Charles of Lawrenceville, GA; four grandsons, Shane Cofer (Kelley), Jody Cofer (Marcia), Tyler Brendle and Casey Connell; five great grandchildren, Allen, Anna, Brittany, Attison, and “Little” Jody; his dear aunt, Mrs. Nell Foster; numerous nieces and nephews.
