Ethel M. Cashin, aged 79, died Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Hope Memory Care Center in Dacula, Georgia. She died peacefully from complications due to Alzheimer’s. Ethel was born August 9, 1935 in Smyrna, Georgia to James (Clifford) and Laura Mulkey as the seventh of eight children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Clyde and Monroe, and sisters Hazel Fountain and Inez Davis. Her remaining siblings, Betty Burnett, Bea Wilson and her brother, JC (Monty) Mulkey are still living. As the youngest girl in the family, Ethel frequently credited her older siblings for raising her. Ethel’s strong independent streak had her leaving home at the age of 18 to get a job at Goldstein’s Clothing store in Marietta. Soon after, she worked for Saks as a clothing model and then made her way to Virginia where she married her first husband, Herbert Bohon. With him, she had two sons, Trade and Scott. They were divorced in 1961. Two years later, Ethel met and married James (Jim) E. Cashin. They had two daughters, Laura (Garmon) and Linda. Ethel wore many hats as mother of four. She was Scout leader, 4-H leader, room mom, and worked as secretary to her husband’s business. She worked as a sales associate at Kmart for 25 years. Ethel was known for her sweetness, ready smile and hard work. She could stretch a dollar further than most. Although she was never rich in money, she was rich in love and friends. She loved reading, gardening, sewing, hiking and driving in the North Georgia mountains. She was loved by kids everywhere. Ethel is survived by all four of her children; her grandchildren, Alex and Kristen Garmon, and step-grandchildren, Amanda Mihalek and Herbie Williams; and her step-great grandchildren Caleb, Wesley, Olivia, Avery and Lily. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 2, at 6 pm at Tom Wages Funeral Home, 120 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville, GA 30046. Visitation will be Monday, February 2, at 4 pm in the same location. For more information, 770-963-2411. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Alzheimer Organization, Georgia Chapter.
