Florence Elizabeth “Betty” Remaley, age 97, of New Castle, PA, entered into rest on Monday, December 31, 2012. She is survived by her five children; four daughters, Linda Altenbaugh of Austin, TX, Cindy Sherer, Mary Beth Bass, Amy McLester and a son, Russell David Remaley all of the Atlanta area. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Russell William Remaley, two children, Michael William Remaley and Sue Ellen Remaley and sisters Dorothy Pollard and Ruth Ramagli. She was a loving “Grammy” to 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Betty was born on November 2, 1915, in Wilkinsburg, PA to Carolyn May Obenour and Michael Francis McParland. She was a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School and California Teachers College. After college Betty worked in Pittsburgh, a city she grew to love. Betty married Russell Remaley on July 29, 1939. They moved to New Castle in 1940. During her 63 years in New Castle she was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Clen-moore Presbyterian Church. During her church life she served as a deacon, taught Sunday school, Bible school and was a member of the Prime Timers and the Irvine Bible Class. Betty was a member of the Junior Guild of the Jameson Hospital and was active in their fundraising efforts. Betty’s greatest joy was her family. Together with her husband, Russ, they raised five children. She never tired of being a homemaker and mother. She was a proud mother and grandmother always taking pride in accomplishments and loved making every occasion special. Her family and friends delighted in her sense of fun and zest for life. She faced many challenges in her 97 years but each challenge was met with determination and she was appreciative of the blessings in her life. A Memorial Service Celebrating the Life of Betty Remaley will be held Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. at Cannon Church with Rev. Dr. Tom Elliott officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the narthex.
