FORTSON: Anne M. Fortson, Age 96, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2008, at the Brian Center in Canton, GA. Anne was born on October 2, 1911 in Jonesboro, GA, and was the daughter of Kossie and Mary Rosa Lee McMullen. She was the devoted wife of the late Sam J. Fortson to whom she was married for 36 years. She was also preceded in death by their son Clay and her three brothers, Eugene, Payton, and Lawrence McMullen. Anne was a long term resident of Pine Lake from 1948 to 1981, and Snellville from 1982 to 2001. In her recent years, she was a resident at Cameron Hall Assisted Living Center and the Brian Center in Canton, GA, where she made many new friendships and received excellent care from the nurses and staff. In addition to being an exceptional Mother to her four children, she was a role model in her many community and charitable endeavors. Anne was the quintessential ?Southern Lady ? in all aspects of her life, possessing the many attributes and qualities that earn a person that designation. She was a faithful member of the Pine Lake Baptist Church, sharing her talents through teaching children in Sunday School and as a choir member. In 1931, she graduated from GSCW in Milledgeville and began a teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Morrow, and later in the Dekalb County school system. In the early 50?s, she joined Rich?s Department Store and for 25 years took great pride in providing the level of customer service that made Rich?s a renowned Southern institution in the 50?s and 60?s. In her retirement years, she traveled extensively, including trips to Costa Rica where her daughter Nancy and family served in the mission field. She loved gardening, cooking, quilting, and sharing memories and humorous stories with her family, friends, and caregivers. She was an inspiration and offered encouragement to the many people who crossed her path, and quickly developed loving relationships in every situation and interface that she encountered. Anne lived her entire life with a positive, optimistic outlook, and viewed every day and every person as a blessing. In all areas of life that are truly important, she was ultra successful. Anne is survived by her daughter and son in law, Nancy and Clive Buttemere of Lancaster PA, and two sons Sam Fortson of Gay GA and Roy Fortson of Cumming GA. Dear Nancy, Sam and Roy,
One of my daughters saw your Mother's Obituary in the paper and called me. She knew it was one of our Pine Lake friends because she had heard my stories of growing up there so many times. Our fond memories of your family still live in our lives. Betty, Irmagene, Danny and myself want you to know you are in our prayers at this time. Your Mother's Obituary was lovely to read. What a dear person she was. As was your whole family. Clay still is a part of my life as witnessed by my daughter recognizing his name in the paper.
Love to all of you, Bunny
