January 12, 1929 - November 6, 2021
Sanford “Rod” Cameron, age 92 of Lilburn, GA passed away November 6, 2021. Rod was born January 12, 1929 in Baldwin, GA to Oscar Lee and Etta Worley Cameron. He graduated from Commerce High School, attended Berry College, where he met his wife Mildred “Mickey” Shipp of Monticello, GA, and later graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He joined the US Navy in 1950 where he was stationed on the USS Missouri during the Korean War until 1954. Rod and Mickey lived in several places throughout their marriage but finally settled in Lilburn, GA where they built their home and gardens and raised their 3 children, Michael, Stephen and Shawn. Rod and Mickey started, owned and operated their newspaper, The Tucker Star, and worked at it tirelessly. Rod was also a typesetter at Foote & Davies, Stein Printing Company and the AJC. After he retired, he created his incredible flower gardens, worked as a substitute teacher with Gwinnett County Public Schools and even drove a school bus. Rod was an avid gardener of flowers, fruits and vegetables and was quite the outdoorsman. People would stop by his home and ask for cuttings of his flowers and to take pictures of them. He was also very active as the Post Commander of VFW Post #5255 in Lawrenceville and was instrumental in getting the Veteran’s Memorial erected in front of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. Rod just wanted to make you smile & laugh. He was generous, reliable, playful and always thankful and joyful. You could always catch him singing. He was patriotic, spirited and fun and always ready to ‘go for a ride’. He loved to drive the kids around on his tractor, taught them to fish and appreciate nature. He always had time for those he loved. Rod was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Mickey, and his son Michael. He is survived by his son Stephen (Caryn) and daughter Shawn (Drew), his grandchildren Colby (Ashley), Coe, Candice (David), Shay, Sophia (Samuel), Noelle, and his great-grandchildren Sam, Laney, Weston, Wyatt, Walker and two more on the way! Rod always joked that his final words would be “when I die, don’t bury me at all, just pickle my bones in alcohol. Put a gallon of whisky at my head and feet and tell the world, ‘he’s only asleep’ “.
