Click to view Livestream Rachel Elvie Fortner of Scottdale, GA, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, at the age of 72 on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 8:00 AM. She passed of metastatic cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Grady Fortner and Vivian Hudlow Fortner of Scottdale, GA; and nephew, James Mason of Snellville, GA. She is survived by her brother, Jerry & Cheryl Fortner of College Park, GA; sisters, Kathleen & husband Robert Knox Mason of Snellville, GA, Miriam Fortner Hartley of Snellville, GA; nephews, Christopher A. Fortner & wife Tina of Goldston, NC, John Robert & wife Diana Mason of Buford, GA; great nephews, Jonathan, David, Caleb, and Joshua Fortner of Goldston, NC, Knox Mason of Buford, GA; great niece, Charlotte (Carly) Mason of Buford, GA. Rachel went to Scottdale Elementary School. Marta bought the lot and turned it into a parking lot for their buses. Rachel graduated from Avondale High School in 1966 and attended DeKalb Technical School for 2 years. Her job was working with DeKalb County Health Department for 35 years. After retirement at East DeKalb and Clifton Springs, she went back to working part-time. Rachel would host family reunions when we got together. Rachel loved to travel and go on vacation. She would plan the trips, things for us to do on vacation, and would work out the payment plan and the amount for each on to pinch in. She went to Hawaii with a church group from Martha Brown United Methodist Church in 1974. She said we would tag along with each other. Rachel and Miriam tagged along too. It was Kathleen and Bob’s wedding gift. Rachel’s hobbies were working with plastic canvas, making diaper bags, pocket books, and jewelry. She liked writing cards and sometimes make her own cards. She loved making scrap books. Rachel also enjoyed fishing, just not baiting hooks with worms. She would get Miriam to do that part. She would use shrimp for her bait. Rachel also enjoyed playing soft ball on the church team. She played first base and was very good at it. Rachel also helped plan Miriam’s wedding, caught the flowers, helped with decorations, and fixed her hair. After having surgery removal of her kidney, she walked up to a mile a day. She collected leaves on the way. The leaves she picked up, she would press them on cards and thank you notes. Rachel also loved collecting Christmas ornaments. Her favorite songs were on Eagles Wings, My God and I, and His Eyes is on the Sparrow. Her church was Avondale/Pattillo United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, worked with youth groups, rang bells in the bell choir, and sang in the choir. She enjoyed entertaining people and fixed meals at the church. Rachel had the opportunity to audition for the Golden Bells of Atlanta, led by Roxanne Golden. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 19, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel. Interment will follow at Melwood Cemetery, Stone Mountain, GA. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Monday from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. In loving memory of Rachel Fortner, donations may be made to Avondale/ Pattillo United Methodist Church, 3260 Covington Hwy, Decatur, GA 30032.
