Phyllis McDowell Caffey

Phyllis McDowell Caffey, age 72 of Snellville, GA passed away Monday, April 15, 2019. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband John William Caffey, Jr.; her parents Mr. & Mrs. George Ernest McDowell, Sr.; her brothers George Ernest McDowell, Jr. and Gary Steven McDowell, and her sister Brenda McDowell Bolick.Phyllis is survived by her son Michael Caffey and daughter-in-law Bonnie Caffey of Hoschton, GA; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives.Phyllis was a native of High Point, NC but lived in Snellville, GA for 30 years. She attended High Point Central High School class of 1965, High Point University class of 1969 where she received a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, and University of Georgia Graduate School class of 1996 where she received a master’s degree in middle grades education.Phyllis worked as a 6th grade Language Arts / Social Studies teacher for Gwinnett County Public Schools at Lanier Middle School from 1980 until she retired in 2003. She was the director of “Hands are not for Hitting” an anti-bullying puppet show for elementary school children from 2005-2015. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Beta Sigma chapter professional teacher sorority.Phyllis was a member of Briarlake Baptist Church in Decatur, GA since 1980. She enjoyed gardening, singing in the church choir, spending time with her family, and spending time with her dog Nikki.Arrangements for Phyllis are as follows. Visitation from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at Tom Wages Funeral Home in Snellville, GA. Funeral service at 3pm on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Tom Wages Funeral Home in Snellville, GA.
