June 24, 1928 - January 5, 2021
Mildred “Cookie” Smith, of Atlanta, Georgia, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on January 5, 2021. She was 92 years old. Her life was a reflection of the love of God that she shared with so many friends and strangers. Cookie was born on June 24, 1928 to the late Howell Lewis Cook, Sr. and Allie Mae Cook. She attended Southwest Dekalb High School and Georgia State University. She met her husband, Walter Alison Smith (Covington, TN), at a dance at Georgia Tech, where he was a student and their first date was at The Varsity. They were married for 38 years, before Walter’s passing in 1990. As a teenager, she became part of history, in her first job, as a tape editor at WSB-TV, when the station first aired in Atlanta in 1948. In later years, Cookie was a bridal consultant for the Rich’s and Macy’s department stores, in Atlanta, for more than 35 years. She was a long time member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, in Decatur, and most recently attended Hebron Baptist Church, in Dacula. In addition to spending time with family and friends, her favorite pastimes were reading the Bible, walking, cheering on the Atlanta Braves, and drinking coffee. Those who knew her knew she rarely met a dessert she didn’t like. Cookie was a true southern lady, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, (Walter); father and mother, (Howell Lewis and Allie Mae Cook); and two brothers, (Jerry and Lewis Cook). She is survived by her children and their spouses, Christopher “Chris” Alison (Donna) Smith of Dacula, GA, Cindy Smith of Fairhope, AL, and Jann (Alex) Moore of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four nieces; two nephews; and her sister-in-law, Jeanette Cook of Marietta, GA. A graveside service will be held at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, Snellville, GA on Monday, January 11, 2021 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org, in memory of Mildred “Cookie” Smith.
