Mary Yvonne Ashworth

October 26, 1935 - February 21, 2021

After a fierce fight with Alzheimer’s my mother lost the battle on February 21, 2021. Mary Yvonne Ashworth, was born in Birmingham, AL on October 26, 1935 to Fred W. and Eva Crowe. Yvonne was the middle child with older sister, Lola Gay, and younger sister, Debbie. Yvonne was very poplar and had many friends growing up and she loved her cars. She had that need for speed! She had her precious son, Clay on May 26, 1956. Yvonne worked for the Kroger Company for 39 years before retiring 22 years ago. She began as a cashier in a store in Birmingham, where she then rose to become the manager of the deli, the bakery, and the butcher shop. She was the shop steward at her location and fought hard for the rights of her fellow employees. With her fierce work ethic and many accomplishments, she started to attract the attention of the upper management. A few of her accomplishments were, she was the first women Journeyman butcher for the Kroger Company. She won awards for the departments that she managed. When her bosses came to her and offered her a promotion in the Atlanta area, she looked to her son Clay who was then a junior in high school, and asked for his opinion, since it was going to affect him the most. He chose to move from Birmingham to Atlanta. So, her and Clay picked up and moved to Atlanta for the opportunity to manage her own Kroger store. By the end of the interview, Yvonne was offered the job of managing her store plus 22 other stores. She became the first woman to be in upper management within the entire Kroger Company throughout the United States in 1973. Yvonne and Clay loved Atlanta and both made many friends. She was such a people person whom loved her family and loved dearly. She loved her career and had a great work life with many promotions and accolades. She enjoyed competing in golf tournaments, but most of all winning those tournaments. She was blessed that her career offered her many wonderful vacations. She loved going to the beach where she would often fish. She enjoyed the breathtaking beaches of Hawaii and the Caribbean, as well as the sandy beaches off the Georgia coast and the Gulf Coast. Yvonne always had one request when she died, that her ashes be scattered over the Bahamas. I guess she really had a wonderful time there. Yvonne loved her family in Birmingham, including her sister, Debbie and her husband Ed; niece, Gina and her family; nephew, Jamie and his family. Yvonne also had many family members in Nebraska who she dearly loved. She especially loved her son, Clay who was her heart. She loved her granddaughter, Ashley and two great grandsons, Ethan and William, who meant the world to her. Yvonne had a special place in her heart for her little dog, Sassy. She is survived by her son Clay and his wife, Anita; granddaughter, Ashley and her husband, Jason Howell; great grandsons, Ethan and William; and little dog, Sassy.
