Margaret Fite

September 6, 1933 - December 24, 2020

Click to view livestream Margaret Fite, age 87 of Grayson, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 24, 2020. Mrs. Fite was born in Macon, Georgia to Dr. Herbert and Marjorie Caudill on September 6, 1933. She grew up in Regla, Cuba, where her parents served as missionaries with the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board. After finishing high school at Candler College in Havana, Margaret continued her studies at Mercer University in Macon, where she met and fell in love with David Fite. She graduated from Mercer in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in History. On June 15, 1955, she and David were married in Fitzgerald, Georgia, where Margaret was serving as minister of music at First Baptist Church. After their wedding, they moved to North Carolina where David attended Southeastern Seminary while pastoring several part-time churches. During this time, James David Fite, Jr. and John Daniel Fite were born. Through the prompting of the Holy Spirit, David and Margaret felt led to go as missionaries to Cuba in 1960. Margaret served as pianist, choir director, and Bible teacher at Buena Vista Baptist Church, where David served as pastor. Shortly after the birth of their youngest son, Mark Joseph Fite in March 1965, the Cuban government arrested David, Dr. Caudill, forty Cuban pastors, and thirteen laypersons affiliated with the Baptist churches in western Cuba on April 8. During David’s 42-month imprisonment, Margaret and her mother Marjorie stayed in Cuba, continuing to provide leadership in their churches, and supporting their husbands through regular visits to them in prison. After David’s release in 1968, the family returned to the United States, where they settled in Fort Worth, Texas. Margaret earned a master’s degree in Education from Texas Christian University and initially supported the family as a bilingual elementary teacher, while David completed a Doctor of Ministry degree and joined the faculty Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1971. After 30 years as a 1st and 2nd grade teacher, Margaret retired from the Ft. Worth Independent School District in 2000, and she and David moved to Lilburn, Georgia in 2001 to be nearer to family. They were active members of Smoke Rise Baptist Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and serving as deacons. In addition to being a member of the Fite Circle and book club, Margaret enjoyed gardening, sewing, and reading. She and David moved to Dogwood Forest of Grayson in 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, James David Fite, Sr.; and sister, Jane Pringle. Mrs. Fite is survived by her brother, Rev. Herbert Caudill, Jr. of Honduras; three sons and their wives, James and Patrice Fite, John and Bonnie Fite, Mark and Georgia Fite; grandchildren, Benjamin & Melanie Fite, Priscilla & John-Paul Petrash, Phillip & Lisa Fite, John Fite, Jr., Gabriel & Jessica Fite, Caleb & Sarah Fite, Colin Fite, Angela Fite, Peyton Fite, Reagan Fite and Jordan Fite; great-grandchildren, Sophia Fite, John-Elliott Petrash, Ellie Fite, Luke Petrash, Daniel Fite, Noah Petrash, Chloe Fite, Sarah Fite; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
