February 14, 1928 - November 29, 2021
It is with great sadness that the family of Mae Campbell Freeman announces her passing on November 29, 2021, at the age of 93 years in Lawrenceville, Ga. Mae was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, Benton "Roe" Freeman on November 22, 2018. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Dr. Pam Greenwood (Scott), of Orlando, Fl., Dr. James Freeman, of Lawrenceville, GA, and Dr. Michael Freeman (Kay), of Knoxville, TN. Born February 14,1928 in Tigerville, S.C., Mae grew up on a farm in Westminster, S.C. with her five brothers and sisters. She devoted her life to Christ at the age of six. When she was only 11, Mae suffered the loss of her father, George Campbell. Her faith in God and devotion to her mother and siblings, inspired her and her sister Bea to work various jobs to help provide for the family. As their school schedule allowed, she and her older sister worked on neighboring farms, Vygodsky's Clothing Store, and as mail delivery for the United States Postal Service. A servant's heart led her and her sister to pursue a nursing degree by way of the U.S. Military Nursing Cadet program through Anderson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing (Now Clemson Univ Sch of Nursing). It was while working on Ward 3 at Greenville General Hospital that she took care of a young man who had been admitted with a severe hand injury. That young man took 3 months to work up the courage to come back and ask her out. When she agreed, the stipulation was that he take her & her roommate out. Their second date was to Pendleton Street Baptist Church and a 69-year marriage of 2 people who truly loved and cherished each other followed. Their faith and Church remained a center point of their life together. Mae dropped out of full-time nursing after Pam was born and did not return until her children were all in high school. She saw parenting as her main priority including nightly devotionals and prayer until they left for college. She returned to Nursing at Grady Memorial Hospital and retired in August of 1986 as the Head Nurse of the ENT Clinic. Her servant's heart and loyalty to those she loved continued as a member of Clarkston International Bible Church for 56 years, where she cherished her women's Sunday School class, serving in children's classes, involvement in missions, helping with Wednesday Evening suppers, and helping in the Church office. She and Roe enjoyed traveling and grandparenting in their retirement years. When she wasn't volunteering at her church or spending time with family, Mae loved gardening (particularly her roses), daily walks, and playing with her dogs (whom she spoiled). In addition to her children, Mae dearly loved her grandchildren and great grandsons. She is lovingly remembered by her five grandchildren, David Freeman (Amber), of Lyon Township, Mich., Caroline Davis (Harrison), of New York, NY, Dr. Brian Freeman (Katherine), of Athens, GA, Dr. James Greenwood, of Charlottesville, Va., and Emily Greenwood, of Orlando, Fl., five great grandsons, Roe, Michael, and Russell Freeman, of Athens, GA, Benton and Hudson Freeman, of Lyon Township, Mich. She is survived by brother Paul Campbell (Rebecca) of Westminster, SC, sisters Joan Price, of Goldsboro, NC, Juanita Czlapinski, of Pittsburgh, Pa., sister-in-law Nellie Campbell, of Westminster, SC and many beloved nieces and nephews. Devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, Mae was a true matriarch and wonderful example of Proverbs 31. She was always prayerful, nurturing, and putting the needs of others before her own. She will be deeply missed by her adoring family, but is now home with her beloved, Roe. Mae was also preceded in death by her parents, George and Lillie Campbell, brother George Campbell, and sister Beatrice Wood. The Service to Honor and Celebrate the Life of Mae C. Freeman will held on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 1 P.M. at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 1901 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615 (864-244-0978) with Dr Trent Deloach, Rev Allen Hill, and Rev.
