Retired FBI Agent, John Robert Maurer, 94, of Snellville, Georgia, passed away January 13, 2020. John was preceded in death within a week by his wife of 73 years, Bettye Lois Maurer; and his youngest daughter, Joanne Mueller to Leukemia in 2018. He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Dobson, of Acworth, and Carol Hayman of Marietta; his seven grandchildren, Joe Gresham (Chicago), Susan Walker (Kennesaw), Tiffany Kane (Smyrna), Mary Griffin (Pacific Beach, WA), Chantra Reidenbaugh (Roswell), Lindsey Wallace (Snellville) and Westin Mueller (Lawrenceville); and ten great grandchildren, Kaley, Madelyn and Ellie Gresham (Chicago), Elliot and Isaac Walker (Kennesaw), Carlynn, Reese and Annalise Reidenbaugh (Roswell) and Declan and Killian Mueller (Lawrenceville); as well as nieces and nephews, Polly Perry, Ken Perry, Terry Pannkuk, Joe Maurer, Jane Rogers and Jim Rogers.John, a native of Wisconsin, was born in Albertville, Wisconsin on July 5, 1925. He graduated from Cadott High School in Cadott, WI, and entered the U.S. Navy during WWII serving in the Amphibious Forces in the South Pacific as a signalman. After the War, he accepted a position as a clerk in the FBI in Washington DC where he met his wife, Bettye. He attended Strayer College and Southeastern University, obtaining an accounting degree and became an FBI agent in 1949. He was assigned to the Boston office where he assisted in investigative work for the Brinks robbery case and later moved to Baltimore MD. In 1952 he transferred to El Paso, Texas. He assisted with law enforcement and FBI in thwarting the first airline hijacking attempt from El Paso to Cuba. His most noteworthy case was the Billie Sol Estes Case of Pecos, Texas. He transferred to Midland, Texas and finally in 1968 transferred to the Atlanta division during the Barbara Jane Mackle kidnapping.He retired from the FBI in 1980 where he continued with private investigative work for Law firms. He started his own business, Tri-Systems, involving the fabrication of equipment for the telecommunication field and obtained two patents. He became an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking.The Funeral Mass to celebrate the life of John Robert Maurer will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 11:00 AM at St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church, Snellville, GA. Fr. Cyriac Mattathilanickal will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, Snellville, GA.
