Closek, Jr Captain (Ret) John Joseph Closek, Jr. John Joseph Closek, Jr., retired US Air Force captain, died peacefully Wednesday, October 20 with his wife and family by his side. He was 74. Husband of Katherine M. Closek; father of Kristin and Collin Closek, Eddie Moore, Karey Schieman, Linda Frazer; grandfather of Mandy and Brandon Moore, Kaitlin and Alex Schieman, Hannah Rose and Lance Jordan Frazer, Jonah Perez Closek; brother of Anna Marie Shimkus; uncle of Rebecca Klaas, Joseph Shimkus, and Angela Ajay. Capt. Closek was born on April 3, 1947 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to his late parents Harriet R. and John J. Closek. He attended St. Elizabeth Elementary School, West Mifflin South High School, and Duquesne University. He traveled the world while in the USAF. After retiring from the USAF, he worked in Ophthalmology at the Emory Eye Clinic for several years. His love for travel, nature, music, and the mountains continued throughout his life. Friends and family will be received from 5-8pm Saturday, October 23 and the service will take place from 3-4pm on Sunday, October 24 at Tom Wages Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, GA. A private burial will take place at Georgia National Cemetery in November.
