James Harvey Kinnett II (The Possum Corner Prince) passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at the age of 72 at his home in Lavonia, Georgia. After a courageous battle with cancer, Jim passed peacefully with his loving wife and his children by his side. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty; and three sons, Jimbo and wife Darlena and their children, Christopher, Savannah, Maddie and Avery, Bradley and wife Stephanie and their children Mason and Taylor, Blake and wife Samantha and their children Jackson, Scarlett and Caroline.Born in Oakland, California he was the son of Julian Francis and Elizabeth DeShong Kinnett. He attended Druid Hills High School Class of 1968, Georgia Military College, and DeKalb Technical Institute. Jim met his wife Betty in High school and together they raised 3 sons in Lilburn, Georgia. An avid golfer, Jim taught his boys the rules of life through his love for game of golf and to live as honorable men. Jim’s passion of mechanics and cars led him to a career in professional drag racing from 1970 –1981. He was one of the best engine builders and was known for his fast cars. From Super Stock to Pro Stock he was one of the best. He was inducted into the NHRA Hall of Fame in 2008. He then owned and operated Kinnett Auto Parts for many years. After selling the auto parts store he began building custom homes with the same passion he had for building engines.The memorial service to celebrate the life of James “Possum” Kinnett, II will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Zoar United Methodist Church Gym, Snellville, GA. Mark Sewell will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation for the gift of mobility and support for vital research towards a cure for paralysis.
