Hazel E. Oates Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Hazel Elaine Oates was born to her beloved parents, George and Greta Thebeau, on March 13, 1952 in Andover, Massachusetts. She later found her one and only true love, Albert “Skip” Eugene Oates, Jr. of Rochester, New Hampshire, who she married on March 31, 1970 in Dover, New Hampshire. Hazel was a dedicated military wife and mother of three whose strength and resilience grounded her family throughout the years as they made homes in many places including Germany to New Hampshire and Vermont to Georgia. Her heart was happiest when her house was filled with loved ones breaking bread with laughter never leaving out all the four-legged friends she saved along the way. Hazel opened her door and her arms to anyone for any reason and you would often find her working hard to be sure they all found her kitchen full of love and nourishment. If you timed it right, you could have filled your plate with her notorious lasagna or spaghetti and meatballs and, if you were lucky enough, you might have even gotten to indulge in a piece of the most delicious banana bread sheet pan cake ever made or even some of her infamous homemade cream pies. If ever you needed an ear or a shoulder, you could find her in her favorite chair or at the kitchen table where she would pour you a coffee and put down her word puzzle so she could find a way to make you feel heard, to make you laugh, and often would close the convo showing you her latest newspaper comic strip cut out to be sure to send you on your way with a smile. Hazel Oates was a kind, open armed, beautiful soul with a contagious laugh that could uplift even the heaviest of spirits. She was preceded in death by her soul mate, Skip Oates; her parents, George and Greta Thebeau; her best friend and sister, Helen Roberge; and her grandson, Eric Summerfield son of Nathan Oates. She is survived by a family who will live every day in celebration of her smile to include her son and his wife, Nathan and Corinne Oates, her other son, Corey Oates and his wife, Shelby Oates, and her daughter, Meghan Gordy and her fiancé, Anthony “Tony” Gordy, Sr. Hazel’s roots extend family tree branches far and wide through her surviving brothers, George “Bill” Thebeau, Jr., Jerome “Joe” Thebeau, and Phillip Thebeau; as well as her surviving grandchildren, Antonio Martinez, Ethan Martinez, Sean Martinez and Angelica Martinez of Meghan Gordy, Josh Bretz of Corey Oates, and Jessica Conway, Alicia Walters and Dawson Edwards children of Corinne Oates as well as Tiava Gordy and Tiffany Gordy children of Tony Gordy. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Reid Bretz of Josh and Jill Bretz; as well as several great grandchildren of Tony Gordy. Hazel Elaine Oates passed away at her home in Snellville, Georgia of Scleroderma at approximately 1.45 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022. She spent her final days and hours surrounded by her children, her grandchildren, her brother, Bill, her extended family and her precious puppy, Baby Girl, who wouldn’t leave her side. The funeral service to celebrate and honor the life of Hazel Elaine Oates will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel, Snellville, GA. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 prior to the service from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the funeral.
