George R. Davenport, age 96, of Lawrenceville passed away Sunday, February 6, 2022. He was the son of the late, George R. and Leila Welborn Davenport. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Margaret; son, Jack; and two brothers, Charles W. and James W. Davenport. He is survived by his daughters, Janet Walker (Bob) and Debra Bishop (David); grandchildren, Jason Walker (Katharine), Justin Walker, Robyn Bates (Michael), Coye Bishop (Ashley), and Kyle Bishop; great-grandchildren, Elle Walker, George Walker, Sawyer Bates, Henry Bates, and Olivia Bishop; and two brothers, Joe E. and Louie A. Davenport. Mr. Davenport worked for Sherwin Williams for 37 years, retiring as Southeast Division President in 1987. He was a member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, GA for 40 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, seeing combat in the Pacific Theater, first aboard the USS Warren and then as a member of Underwater Demolition Team 16 (UDT-16). A service to honor the life of George R. Davenport will be held on Thursday, February 10 at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Smoke Rise Baptist Church with Dr. Chris George officiating. The family will receive friends at Tom M. Wages funeral home in Snellville on Wednesday, February 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will follow on Friday, February 11 at 11:00 at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to Smoke Rise Baptist Church Due to COVID-19 regulations, our staff is committed to taking care of our guests and families that we serve.
