I just came across this obituary...Gene Evans was one of the nicest people I have met in my lifetime. I was just a young rural kid out of high school and attending college in the sixties in the Green Bay area and ended up playing summer ball on a new team (to me). The second baseman on that team (Gene) , who obviously knew the game befriended me and taught me more about the game than any prior coach. I became a high school coach myself and thanks to his patience and teaching helped me achieve a lot of success coaching. He was the kind of person one never forgets. Great memories of a super person. Your family can be very proud. Mike Kaczmarek now of Oconto Falls,WI.

So sorry to hear of Gene's passing. I hope he read the UW baseball book before his death. He was a great help to me in the process. He also was a roommate and friend of my late uncle James Schmitt and my father Don Schmitt.
