"Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in (Harbins)? A number of men have been used by God to affect life-altering changes in my life and Carey Cash is in the top three. From the time I became pastor at Ebenezer until now I have had nothing but the utmost respect for him. For almost twelve years, as I was pastor, we had many encounters and some of them occurred at 5:30 in the mornings. I would walk or jog in the area of Ebenezer church and some mornings I would be passing the Cash household and knew that Carey was up at that time. The newspaper was in the drive, so I would knock and enter the house. Then Carey and I would spend time, some short and some more lengthy, discussing a variety of issues.
An interesting incident occurred one day when I was walking from the church pastorium, which Carey and his crew built, to the church meeting facility. Carey and Louise had established their grave plot on the corner and as I looked at the marker with Carey's birth date on it, I recognized the date as being the exact same day that my father was born. From then until June 3, 2019, I called Carey and wished him a happy birthday.
The time when our relationship deepened occurred around February 2003. I was journeying through the most difficult time I had ever experienced in my life and Carey became my confidant and encourager. I spent a great deal of time with him as he coached me through a change of attitude and experienced grace and learned how to be gracious to others in a way that was more like Jesus.
For me, truly, a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Harbins.
