He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Newton and Mae Etna Shaw; wife, MaLinda Shaw; brothers, Michael Shaw, Jack Shaw, David Shaw and Newt Shaw; sisters, Jean Bryant and Janice Williamson. Billy is survived by his loving family: son, Trippi Shaw; daughter, Kelli Young; son-in-law, Darren Young; grandchildren, Alexei Young and Caden Young; sister, Melissa Carithers; brother-in-law, Mike Carithers; sister, Sandy Colquitt, as well as extended family and friends. Billy was born to Henry and Mae Etna Shaw in Athens, Georgia on April 26, 1936. Growing up, Billy played football from childhood at the YMCA to running back with Athens High School. He lived and breathed football and would tell you fondly that he bleeds red and black for UGA. Billy joined the Army in 1954 right after high school and during the Korean War. It was there that Billy was trained as an Airborne Paratrooper. Not long after honorable discharge, he went to work for the Georgia Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer. He dedicated his entire career to the department, earning recognition, awards, and promotions for his dedication and hard work. He excelled as a leader and was often described as honorable, fair and firm. After 35 years, he retired as Deputy Warden with Stone Mountain Boot Camp. Billy and MaLinda were married on March 15, 1969 and made their home all over Georgia as Billy was often transferred from one prison to another as part of his career. When he wasn’t working, Billy enjoyed sports. He played on adult softball teams, coached Trippi when he was younger and would drive across the state on more Friday nights than Kelli could remember with her in the backseat of the car to watch his nephews play football. When his grandchildren began playing sports, he was retired and could enjoy spending his time at the dirt field watching Lexei play softball and on the grass watching Caden play soccer. Billy was a generous soul. He epitomized the phrase “Give the Shirt off His Back.” He was persnickety and stubborn, opinionated and wise; you were lucky if you learned from him as he had loads of wisdom and insights to share. Most endearing was his dry sense of humor that kept us laughing even when he was not trying to be funny. The memorial service to celebrate the life of Billy Shaw will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel, Snellville, GA. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel from 11:00 AM until the hour of service.
