Lady Cynthia Bernadette Gairy, age 94, of Snellville, Georgia entered into rest on Monday, January 29, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eric Matthew Gairy. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Marcelle Gairy and Jennifer Gairy both of Snellville, Georgia; numerous cousins and a host of many friends.Lady Gairy was born in St. David, Grenada on March 25, 1923 to Francis Clyne and Felicity Francis Clyne. Lady Gairy was the first woman in Grenada to be elected as a Parliamentarian and served her country from 1961 to 1979. Besides her pioneering political career, she will be remembered for her commitment to her parish and to cooperative community development nationwide.She was a feminist before feminism was cool, believing that while some first-world countries still struggled with gender equality, the government of which she was a part already recognized that Grenada’s women could make as strong a contribution to Grenada’s development as their male counterparts and she strove to maximize the potential of women’s contributions to the workforce by emphasizing training, pre-school development and other things which would facilitate that goal.She was a devout Catholic, fully dedicated to the parishes of which she was a member, and she served as organist and choir director of the St. David’s Catholic Church for several years.The Funeral Mass Honoring the Life of Lady Cynthia Bernadette Gairy will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 25 Boulevard NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30312 with parking available at 494 Edgewood Avenue. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and also after the Funeral Mass at the church.
